Description
Discover Kykkos Monastery & Kakopetria: A Day Trip from Ayia Napa You Won’t Forget
If you’re sunbaked and beach-bronzed but craving something a little mountainous, this day trip from Ayia Napa is your ticket to a different kind of magic. We’re swapping waves for waterfalls, and mojitos for monastery bells.
Hop aboard the comfy coach and join us on a scenic journey to Cyprus’s Troodos Mountains, where you’ll step into postcard-perfect villages, forest-covered peaks, and the country’s most opulent monastery – Kykkos.
Spoiler alert: there’s even a silver-gilded icon believed to work miracles.
Why This Tour Is an Absolute Must
Let’s face it – Ayia Napa isn’t all about foam parties and beach clubs (though we love those too).
This trip whisks you up into the clouds (well, 1,318 meters up) for a refreshing change of pace.
You’ll explore ancient religious sites, lush forests, and old-world villages that feel like time-travel destinations.
It’s cultural, it’s scenic, it’s soul-nourishing – and it includes a stop with a view so pretty, you’ll want to marry it.
Payment and Booking
You will pay only a tiny part of the amount through PayPal (a deposit) at the time of payment.
That way, we can reserve a place for you on the tour and guarantee your place.
You will pay the rest of the payment (The balance) for the tour to the driver/guide (in cash) at the beginning of the tour.
First Stop: Kakopetria – The Village That Time Forgot
Ever wanted to walk through a real-life fairytale? Welcome to Kakopetria. With cobbled streets, traditional stone houses, and gurgling streams, this village feels hand-crafted for Instagram.
Take a stroll, sip a mountain coffee, or enjoy mingling with locals who like tourists (true story).
Climbing Higher: A Visit to Throni and a Presidential Tomb
Next, we wind up to Throni, nestled deep in a pine forest.
The air gets cooler, the views get better, and you get to stand in a place of major national significance: the tomb of Archbishop Makarios III – Cyprus’s first President.
There is a little history and a lot of scenery. Bring your camera because this place serves panoramic views on a silver platter.
The Main Event: Kykkos Monastery
Now, brace yourself. Kykkos isn’t your average monastery – it’s the monastery.
Think gold, marble, mosaic, and a sprinkle of miracle. Built in 1092, it’s the island’s richest and most famous monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Inside, you’ll find one of the only remaining icons painted by Saint Luke himself (yes, that Saint Luke), tucked in a tortoiseshell, silver, and mother-of-pearl shrine.
Even if you’re not religious, the artistry and aura of the place will blow you away.
Lunch Break & Free Time (aka: Monk-Approved Munchies)
After all that spiritual splendor, you’ll have about 1 hour and 45 minutes of free time.
Explore the monastery grounds further or treat yourself to lunch at one of the nearby eateries (optional and not included – but highly recommended).
Important Dress Code Reminder
A sacred site deserves respectful attire.
Both men and women are prohibited from wearing tank tops or shorts at Throni and Kykkos Monastery.
Think shoulders and knees covered. (You don’t want to be that tourist.)
What’s Included (and What’s Not)
You’ll get a full-day guided experience, a comfortable air-conditioned ride, and a balanced combination of cultural insight and relaxation.
Meals aren’t included, so bring a few extra euros for lunch and maybe a monastery souvenir (blessed bottle openers, anyone?).
